Lil Ugly Sister XXX is ready to Kawaii or Die

Lil Ugly Sister Interview Written and conducted by Gary John Miller

Lil Ugly Sister XXX is an up-and-coming musical artist hailing from Denver, CO who recently released his debut LP Kawaii or Die available to stream everywhere. Gary John Miller recently got the chance to talk to him about his album and other ventures.

Gary Miller: Tell us about Kawaii or Die

Lil Ugly Sister: The title comes from Kawaii which means being cute but also savage. I got a lot of inspiration from Metal (music) and punk too. It’s like a beautiful juxtaposition. It’s like a Wolverine. It’s a cute album that you can mosh too. I just had fun with it. I didn’t have set goals or a sound I needed to create, I only wanted to have fun. I think you can hear how much fun I had with it. I think it came out unique and nobody is creating this type of sound that I’m making.

GM: Do you feel like you’ve come into your own with your sound?

LUS: Yeah. Absolutely. There are other people I think that will be inspired by this sound. I don’t think it’s the best but it’s definitely . . . It’s so subjective but it’s my sound.

GM: I think Chanel is one of those tracks that exemplifies that.

LUS: Chanel was one that I based on my energy that day. I got a drunk call at midnight, I won’t name names, but I got a drunk call and I thought that was lame. It pissed me off and I just wanted to go off. I heard that beat from the producer Kirk and I just knew it was the one and it was so high energy. I think I tapped into that energy. It was like, “you got blood on my Chanel” . . . it was like, “you dumb bitch” you done got blood on my nice clothes (Lil Ugly sister laughs).

GM: You infused a lot of Anime and video game culture in your album and you designed the cover as well?

LUS: The unicorns and the character Pain from Naruto on that are because they keep with that theme of cute and tough rolled into one. That character is so complex and when I say cuteness I mean that positivity, that stuff you don’t want to see with the blood and gore. I think Anime can have that good and bad, where one scene is really cute and the next is intense. This was a fun project to do from scratch.

GM: You were recently featured in some news articles. What’s it like to get some notoriety?

LUS: I’ve been doing this since I was in high school. I wasn’t fully confident in my persona or my art and I’ve gone through multiple mixtapes and deleted them. I have asked people to delete stuff. Now I’m at a stage where I’m fully polished where I want not where other people want me to be or where I think I should be. I’m where I want to be. It feels good that people are noticing. It’s surreal to see yourself pop up on google news or get 40k streams on a song. I just don’t want to be complacent.

GM: It was only released 9 months ago, correct?

LUS: Yup. It was a cool process. I think the first one I had an “oh shit” moment where I was like I might’ve done something was with “Cut Throat Bitch”

GM: You have been taking the bull by the horns and creating your stuff. You also did an art show recently?

LUS: Yeah we did an art show that was low pressure and people were just able to vibe. It was an art show called the “Lil ugly art show. We had Trippy the kid, Ray Reed, Rooftop York, Leavestrand, Paintbrush Mickey. We had a lot of cool artists I’m missing as well. We were just having fun. It was great. We had artists selling merch and paintings. Nobody was a jerk. It was fun.

Lil Ugly Sister is currently working on a follow-up project called Boy Bands that will be released single by single.
